Understanding the World – Past and Present

By the end of Nursery

  • Talk about their own everyday lives and about what they have already done
  • Begin to use words such as yesterday, last week, now, soon
  • To talk about themselves and their family/people close to them.
  • To talk about personal past events that they can remember.
  • To discuss characters/settings and events read during storytimes.
  • To comment on their family and people close to them as well as people in the wider world.
  • To talk about events that have happened in the past that are relevant to them or their interests and stories that they have read.
  • Talk about the roles people play in the world. (I.e. jobs, what we do to help the planet etc)
  • Discuss the differences and similarities between the past and the present using photographs, stories, important events etc.

Early Learning Goal

Talk about the lives of the people around them and their roles in society. Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. Understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.

• Shows interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them

• Enjoys joining in with family customs and routines

• Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience

• Recognises and describes special times or events for family or friends

• Shows interest in different occupations and ways of life indoors and outdoors

• Knows some of the things that make them unique, and can talk about some of the similarities and differences in relation to friends or family

  • Talk about members of their immediate family and community.
  • Name and describe people who are special to them.
  • Discuss own life in relation to culture, beliefs traditions (I’.e. on my birthday I have cake’.)
  • To understand where they live and that there are lots of other places in the world in addition ours.
  • To understand and respect that everyone is different in terms of likes, looks, ability, home and beliefs through stories, peers and familiar/known people.
  • Describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion and stories
  • Know some similarities and differences between themselves and those from/with different countries, cultures and beliefs. Including festivals such as Christmas, Easter and Holi.
  • Explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries

  • To comment on and make vocal observations on their immediate environment.
  • Explore the natural world around them and comment on the changes they notice over time.
  • Describe what they see, hear and feel whilst outside.
  • Understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around them.
  • Recognise some environments that are different to the one in which they live.
  • Explore the natural world around them, discussing what they see and offering explanations to any differences (including animals and plants)
  • Join in with discussions about the differences/similarities in contrasting environments and countries.
