Bincombe Valley Primary School

Parental Questionnaire Results

Many thanks for taking the time to complete the latest Parental Questionnaire. We had 108 responses from the questionnaires completed which give us a very strong picture of your opinions.

Comment: It’s absolutely brilliant to see that the majority of the responses to this were positive and that matches what we see in school with happy, smiling children! It is really important that children enjoy their learning so that they can get the most from it. If your child isn’t enjoying coming to school for any particular reason please come and talk to us so that we can work with you to make sure they do.

Comment: It is really important that all children feel safe in their school so that they are confident and ready to learn so it is very encouraging to see that over 90% of you agree that this is the case. If that isn’t the case for your child please make an appointment to come and see us and let us know why so we can help.

Comment: We speak to all the children in school on a regular basis to make sure that they all know who to speak to if they are worried about themselves or someone that they know being bullied. We have reinforced the message to all the children that the school does not tolerate bullying of any kind. We have also been through with the children what bullying actually is, so that they don’t mistake it with falling out with their friends. Anti-bullying week is a national focus week which we take part in. This year it is the week beginning the 11th November.

Comment: As a general rule you are very good at getting in touch with us if there is a problem. Please continue to do so. Remember in the first instance please contact your child’s class teacher. If things don’t get resolved easily then Mr Upton, Mrs Hughes, Miss Llewellyn or I will get involved too.

Comment: As a school we don’t tolerate bullying and work hard to make sure that all the children understand that it is wrong. I am encouraged to see that the majority of you recognise that we deal with any incidences that we are made aware of. However, we can only do something if we know about it so please do come and talk if you think that there is a problem and we will work with you to resolve any issues. We are also aware that many families are not able to grade this question one way or another as their children have not experienced any form of bullying.

Comment: It is really important that all children have in mind a trusted adult who they can talk to if they ever needed to. We encourage the children to think of trusted adults in different walks of life too, for example, at home, in school, at clubs.

Comment: The children at Bincombe Valley make good progress, regardless of their starting point. The progress measure is, in our eyes, more important than the attainment measure. We try to instil in the children that the most important thing is that they always try their best at everything they do. If you have a concern about your child’s progress or feel that you need more information about the assessment systems used in school, please speak to your child’s class teacher or make an appointment with me.

Comment: We publish lots of information about the curriculum we teach on the website, including overviews for each subject each year. Please access this here for further information.

Comment:  We believe that the pupils at Bincombe Valley are exposed to a broad and balanced curriculum. Each National Curriculum subject is given time on the timetable and wherever possible we also try to link the children's learning to a local and a global level.

Comment: We run a good range of lunchtime and after-school clubs which the children are really good at attending. Each year we try to add a little variety to these clubs so that we can cater for most interests. It is great when home encourages the children to try something new - you never know it might just become their favourite pastime!

Comment:  Over the past few years we have tried to increase the number of opportunities for personal development within the school. We even have a regular feature on careers information too. For a more detailed look at the personal development offer at Bincombe Valley, please click here.

Comment: It is really important that parents/carers know how well their children are doing in school. We send home a termly progress check in the Autumn and Spring Terms. Parents' Evenings also happen in these terms too. At the end of the school year we send out an annual school report which also includes any statutory assessment information on it too. We are always pleased to see so many of you attend our 'drop-in open mornings' for Maths and English as well. Sometimes seeing your child in action in the classroom is the best indicator of how they are doing. Parents/carers are also welcome to make appointments with class teachers to discuss progress in individual subject areas.

Comment: Bincombe Valley has high expectations for all children, regardless of their starting points. This applies to academic achievement as well as behaviour and personal development. We all want the children here to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. I know that your children regularly make you very proud!

Comment: One of the great strengths here at Bincombe is the way in which the teaching and support staff work with children as individuals. All staff work hard to make sure that all children can access the curriculum at an appropriate level. The SEN and Nurture Department led by Mrs Hughes has worked very closely with many of you over the last year to put things in place to help meet children’s specific needs. If you have any concerns about this please do get in touch with Mrs Hughes or myself.

Comment: Parents have always had very different views about the subject of homework. As a school we believe that homework is an important part of a child’s development as it shows that they can follow up the work that is done in school in an independent way. We try to set homework that is appropriate for each child in terms of their age and ability but sometimes they will need a little extra help with it. We also want the children to be in good routines and habits in time for their transition to secondary education.

If you feel that your child is struggling to complete the Homework that has been set please contact their class teacher to let them know.

Comment: We appreciate that helping your child with Homework isn’t always the easiest thing to do and can sometimes cause a little tension between parent and child at times! We are adding more to the website all the time about the strategies we use in school to support learning which may be helpful to you.  Many of you found the Open Days useful as you were able to see the methods the children were using in the classroom and therefore be able to support at home using the same methods. We are also planning some more sessions for parents on the topics you have told us that you want.

Comment: I have some fascinating conversations on the school gate in the morning. Some of this is about the best way to support your child's learning and development. It is really encouraging to see how positive your response were to this question but please watch out for the latest sessions on supporting learning that we will be running in school this year.

Comment: We have a wonderful team here at Bincombe and the results above suggest that you agree. We know how important it is to maintain a healthy and positive relationship between school and home so that the children know we are one big team supporting them to thrive.

Comment: I have a huge amount of support from the Leadership Team, the staff and the Governors of the school. We have the attitude that we have an amazing school with wonderful staff and children but that there will always be things that will be new or that we can improve upon.  I like to think that we achieve this through open dialogue and a desire to make the school the best place for the children that it can be.

Comment: Thank you for sharing with us about your level of internet connection at home. It helps us when making decisions about the bets ways to share information and how easily you are able to access any online learning support/programmes. If you ever feel that you are really disadvantaged by not being able to access online content please do come and chat with us. we might not have all the solutions but we may be able to point you in the right direction of someone who has!

Question 21 related to individual comments about pupils.

Comment:  Thank you for letting us know which additional sessions you would find useful. We are currently working on the best way to put these on for you.

Once again, a huge thank you for taking the time to complete our annual questionnaire. We really appreciate working in partnership with you.

Mr. Pallister
