Personal, Social, Health Education

Intent

At Bincombe Valley School, the Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. Our intent is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every child feels valued and supported, promoting their physical and mental well-being. We aim to foster resilience, self-esteem, and empathy, ensuring that pupils develop a strong moral compass and a clear understanding of their rights and responsibilities within the community and wider society. Through our PSHE curriculum, we intend to prepare our pupils to be respectful, confident, and responsible citizens.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through a structured and comprehensive program that is integrated into our weekly timetable. Lessons are planned to be age-appropriate and engaging, using a variety of teaching methods including discussions, role-plays, and interactive activities. We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work, ensuring our curriculum is up-to-date with statutory requirements and reflects the diverse needs of our pupils.

Key components of our PSHE curriculum include:

  • Health and Well-being: Topics such as healthy lifestyles, mental health, and emotional well-being.
  • Relationships: Building positive relationships, understanding diversity, and respecting others.
  • Living in the Wider World: Economic well-being, career education, and understanding the role of the citizen in society.

Special events, assemblies, and workshops complement the curriculum, providing opportunities for pupils to engage with external experts and role models. We also ensure that our PSHE curriculum is inclusive and sensitive to the needs of all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Golden Threads

Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by key "golden threads" that run throughout all topics and year groups, ensuring continuity and progression in learning:

  1. Respect and Empathy: Promoting understanding and respect for self and others, recognizing and valuing diversity, and developing empathy.
  2. Safety and Risk Management: Educating pupils about personal safety, including online safety, and helping them to identify, assess, and manage risks in various situations.
  3. Health and Well-being: Encouraging pupils to lead healthy lives, both physically and mentally, and to understand the factors that contribute to well-being.
  4. Positive Relationships: Teaching the skills to build and maintain healthy, respectful, and positive relationships with others.
  5. Resilience and Self-esteem: Building pupils' confidence, resilience, and ability to persevere in the face of challenges.
  6. Responsibility and Citizenship: Instilling a sense of responsibility and active participation in the school, local, and global communities.

Each year group, from Early Years to Year 6, follows the same topic themes throughout the year. They are:

Autumn term 1 - Being me in my World

Autumn term 2 - Celebrating difference

Spring term 1 - Dreams and goals

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is measured through both qualitative and quantitative methods. We observe and assess the development of pupils' social skills, emotional resilience, and overall well-being through classroom interactions, feedback from teachers, and pupil voice surveys.

The anticipated impact includes:

  • Enhanced Well-being: Pupils demonstrate improved mental and physical health, exhibiting healthy lifestyle choices and positive coping strategies.
  • Positive Relationships: Pupils build and maintain respectful and caring relationships with peers and adults.
  • Informed and Responsible Citizens: Pupils show an understanding of their rights and responsibilities, participating actively and responsibly in the school and wider community.

Ultimately, our PSHE curriculum at Bincombe Valley School aims to empower pupils to lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives, equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of the modern world.
