Music
Intent
Here at Bincombe Valley Primary School, the intent of our Music curriculum is to provide a well-rounded and enriching musical education that fosters a love and appreciation for music, develops musical skills, and celebrates cultural diversity. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of musical genres, styles, and traditions, nurturing their creativity, confidence, and self-expression through music.
Our intent is underpinned by the following key objectives:
- To inspire a passion for music through high-quality teaching that is inclusive and accessible to all pupils.
- To develop pupils' musical knowledge, skills, and understanding through a sequential and progressive curriculum that covers a breadth of musical experiences.
- To provide opportunities for pupils to perform, compose, and appraise music individually and collaboratively, enabling them to express themselves creatively and build confidence.
- To celebrate the rich tapestry of musical traditions and cultures, promoting diversity and inclusion within our music curriculum.
- To foster links with the wider community, including music professionals and local cultural institutions, to enhance pupils' musical experiences and aspirations.
Implementation
We implement our Music curriculum through a variety of strategies that ensure a consistent and high-quality provision for all pupils. Our implementation strategies include:
- Curriculum Design: Our Music curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to provide a broad and balanced musical education, incorporating elements of listening, performing, composing, and appraising music.
- Progression: The exploration of sounds begins in EYFS, where provision is made through structured musical activities and continuous provision. This is built upon throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
- Resources and Facilities: We have a dedicated music space equipped with a range of instruments, technology, and resources to support the delivery of practical music lessons and activities. We subscribe to Charanga as a whole school scheme. However, we also engage in local projects in the local community and welcome inspiring specialist teachers to enhance the pupils’ musical experiences.
- SEND: Our Music provision is entirely inclusive. Not only do our SEND pupils thrive in their class-based Music lessons, they are also positively encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities – where they can further develop their creativity, confidence, social-skills and self- awareness.
- Extra-Curricular Opportunities: We offer a range of extra-curricular music activities such as specialist instrumental lessons and music clubs to further enhance pupils' musical experiences and skills.
- Cross-Curricular Links: We make meaningful connections between music and other subjects, promoting creativity, critical thinking, and cultural understanding across the curriculum.
