Intent
Our geography curriculum aims to cultivate a deep understanding and appreciation of the world around our pupils. At Bincombe Valley Primary School we strive to inspire curiosity about different places, cultures, and environments, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards our planet. Through the exploration of location, diversity, and relationships, we aim to develop informed, compassionate global citizens who are equipped to engage with the challenges of the future.
Implementation
Our geography curriculum is delivered through a balanced and progressive approach that builds knowledge and skills year by year. Lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging, utilizing a range of resources including maps, digital tools, field trips, and cross-curricular links.
Key components of our Geography curriculum include:
- Location: Pupils will learn about key geographical concepts such as continents, countries, and local features, using maps and globes to identify and describe significant locations.
- Diversity: We explore the physical and human geography of different regions, highlighting cultural practices, traditions, and environments. This promotes understanding and respect for diverse communities and lifestyles.
- Relationships: Emphasizing the interconnectedness of people and places, we investigate how human activities impact the environment and vice versa. Pupils will examine sustainability and global issues, developing critical thinking about their roles within local and global contexts.
Golden Threads
Our Geography curriculum is underpinned by three key ‘golden threads’ that run throughout learning in all year groups to ensure continuity and progression.
- Location: Pupils will acquire map-reading skills and understand spatial relationships, developing their ability to navigate and recognize significant geographical features.
- Diversity: Through comparative studies of various regions, pupils will appreciate cultural differences and similarities, fostering an inclusive mind-set.
- Relationships: We will focus on human-environment interactions, encouraging pupils to analyse the effects of these relationships on both local and global scales, promoting environmental stewardship.
