Early Years Foundation Stage
‘In the Foundation Stage at Bincombe Valley Primary we aim to provide a play-based learning environment where children are happy and engaged. We believe firm foundations lead to future success.’
Our curriculum in Early Years is defined simply as ‘all that we do’ and is made up of Enabling Environments, Positive relationships, and the Unique Child. The Characteristics of Effective Learning underpin the areas of learning and development.
Each of the Nurseries and the Reception Class is set up to reflect the Seven Areas of Learning in the EYFS curriculum. The environment is designed to be ‘enabling’ allowing children to develop their learning and promote independence through a range of continuous and enhanced provision. In both Nurseries and Reception children have access to an outdoor Learning Environment in all weathers. Planning is designed to reflect the needs and interests of the children. Each term we may have broad themes, but these are flexible. Through observation and skilful interaction ‘planning in the moment’ is being developed in the Nurseries. We use the Birth to Five Matters Guidance alongside The Statutory Framework to support our curriculum and pedagogy.
The daily routine is designed to develop independence and to allow the older children to have time for focused key group and bigger group times. In Buds children also have Key groups and enjoy coming together for stories, singing and activities.
In Reception children have access to daily adult focussed activities such as phonics but also spend time in child-initiated activities. During these times adults use objective led tracking sheets to focus on next steps of learning for individual children.
Our EY Curriculum ensures that as the children progress through the Early Years they develop foundation skills, are able to know and remember more so they are ready for the next stage in their learning in KS1 and the National Curriculum.
We follow the Read, Write, Inc. Phonics scheme in the Early Years.
