Art & Design
At Bincombe, we aim to inspire children to be able to create their own works of art. We hope to encourage their creativity and imagination by developing their confidence in expressing themselves and experimenting with a wide variety of media and materials. Our curriculum is designed to do this in a progressive manner to help develop and nurture everyone’s creative ability.
Children use sketchbooks to experiment with newly taught skills and artwork is regularly celebrated and can often be seen in classroom or school displays.
Intent- What does the Art curriculum intend to do?
We have planned our Art curriculum to ensure that all children are taught the skills and given the opportunities needed to let their creativity flourish. They will learn about art and artists across history and cultures as well as be able to express their own thoughts and ideas. Children will have been given every stepping stone needed to support them reaching their end of Key Stage attainment targets.
There are four Golden Threads to our Art curriculum. These are:
- Drawing
- Sculpture and 3D Modellling
- Painting and Mixed Media
- Craft and Design
These themes/skills are revisited regularly throughout the children’s school journey. This means that they will easily be able to make links to prior learning thus increasing their confidence in the subject and enabling them to remember more.
Implementation – What will this look like in practice?
Across the school planned, age-appropriate units are taught each term (alternating half-termly with Design and Technology). These units consist of weekly lessons focusing on a specific Art topic. The lessons are sequential and progressive, slowly building on what has been taught previously in order to maintain the children’s confidence and give them time to explore/experiment. There is a huge practical element to this subject due to its exploratory nature. Lessons are differentiated to ensure maximum impact of each lesson for ALL children
During each unit children will be given the opportunity to do each of the following:
- Generate artistic ideas
- Use sketchbooks to practice and progress skills
- Improve making/creative skills using formal elements
- Develop knowledge of an artist and/or culture
- Evaluate and analyse their own and others’ art work
Impact - What progress will children make?
Children will be able to talk about what they have learnt in their Art lessons due to their involvement in regular evaluations and discussions during their lessons. They will be able to produce creative work which will record their ideas and experiences and they will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques. They will have a bank of subject-specific vocabulary to draw on when taking part in evaluating and analysing discussions as well as have knowledge about a variety of artists and movements. All of this should support them in meeting the end of key stage expectations which are outlined in the National Curriculum.
