A Week in The HUB

WC 13th November 2023

This week we have enjoyed the story 'The Gruffalo' and we made some delicious Gruffalo Crumble. It was our first full week in school and we practised lots of different routines, getting familiar with the school day.



WC 20th November 2023

 This week we are learning the story 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. On Monday, we listened to the story and made lighthouses. On Tuesday, we made the little white cottage and made a cup and string phone to talk to each other between the lighthouse and cottage. We also described the seagulls from the story - those greedy, pesky seagulls! Later in the week, we iced sea biscuits, just like the ones Mrs Grinling had baked. 

In maths this week, we have been doing some measurement work and using a number line to count and estimate.


WC 27th November 2023 

This week we have been reading the story ''The Giant Jam Sandwich!'. This follows on from last week's food theme and instruction writing. this week the children will be baking bread, making jam sandwiches and writing instructions. We have been finding the pulse in songs this week and experimented with musical instruments too. 



WC 4th December 2023

This week we have been enjoying the story "Tiddalick the Greedy Frog'. In the story, Tiddalick drinks all the water leaving his animal friend's to despair. They hatch a plan to get the water back so they can all enjoy the water.

We have made musical instruments this week to accompany are singing and dancing. In the story, the other animals to silly dances to make Tiddalick laugh. In PE, we have been hopping and leaping onto lily pads. 



WC 11th December 2023

This week we have been enjoying the story 'Stick Man' by Julia Donaldson. We have done some work on rhyme and alliteration. As the week progresses, we will begin to think about Christmas and do some Christmas themed arts and crafts. On Friday, we will watch a Christmas film during the afternoon and play some party games. 



WC 1st January 2024

We welcome two new children to The Hub this week. We have been enjoying the story 'The Tiger Who Came For Tea' this week. In history, we have been to explore our monarchy and the royal family and their history. In art, we have been looking at colour mixing using primary colours. The children have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes in maths. 



WC 8th  January 2024

We enjoyed the story 'Zog' this week. The children have enjoyed making castles in history as we learn about the monarchy past and present. The children have enjoyed making connections between our history topic and the knights, princesses and castles in the story 'Zog'. We have been using adjectives to describe the characters emotions and we've looked at using the 'er' and 'est' suffix to make comparisons between the characters. In maths, we have continued to explore place value and the properties of 3D shapes. In art this week, we continue to explore primary colours and colour mixing to make secondary colours. In PE, we have practised stopping and starting, developing these fundamental movement skills. 



WC 15th  January 2024

This week, we have enjoyed the traditional tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. The children were learning about setting description using the stem sentence, 'Jack can see....' to help their understanding. In maths we have been looking at composition of numbers, the different parts a whole number can be divided into e.g. 10 is 4 and 6. In history, we looked at the features of castles and tried to replicate these with our construction toys. In music, we compared different music pieces and discussed how they made us feel, using drawing to help. 



WC 22nd January 2024

This week we have been enjoying Jasper's Beanstalk, comparing this with last week's traditional tale, 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. We have learned the days of the week, instructions on how to plant and grow seeds and the life cycle of plants. In maths we have looking at addition and doubling. In history we have continued to learn about the monarchy and looking at monarchs from the past such as William the Conquerer, making shields that his knights might have once used.



WC 29th January 2024

This week we have been learning the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We have been using Colourful Semantics to help compose and structure our sentences and conversations. In maths, we have continued to learn subtraction. In PE, we have been learning how to dribble a ball and keep it under control. On Friday, we celebrated NSPCC's World Number Day by enjoying lots of different number and maths related games and activities, including an outdoor maths hunt,



WC 5th February 2024

This week we have enjoyed the story 'The Runaway Pancake'. The children have learned how to make pancakes and have designed their own pancake. We have conducted some research across the school to identify the favourite topping - strawberries. We have made and enjoyed some pancakes too. We have learned about Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day too. Our outdoor area has been taking shape this week and we hope it is ready to use when we return after half term.



WC 19th February 2024

This week we have spent as much time as possible outside, enjoying our new outdoor play space. We have been learning how to use each space safely with our friends. Alongside this, we continue to develop the children's understanding of feelings and emotions. We have identifying some of simple emotions and feelings this week.
